Small Stories

I asked the Chaosium discord RuneQuest channel for ideas for this week, and the suggestion was ‘why small stories matter’. But heroic Mirza, who actually gave me that idea, didn’t give me anything more – I asked if they wanted to steer me and they said no. So, here it is. Or they are.

Why small stories matter

Am trollkin. Story matters to me. Had brothers, sisters. Eaten. All gone. Remember story of family. We talk of things. Of enough food. Not get eaten. Place of not threat. Xiola Umbar pot feeds us all. Last sister die, I come here. Temple. Spear-troll. Place of enough food. Not get eaten. Learn to be threat.

I went there. It was smaller than I thought, Boldhome was. After you’ve seen Nochet, nothing’s big. But it was worth the trading, and the travel. I turned a clear profit. You’d do well to invest in my next caravan. What do you mean, ‘Detect Truth’?

Why small stories matter

It was a toddler who told me this. That through the tunnel where grown-ups can’t go there is a magical land. I didn’t believe it, of course, but to be sure we went and hired that Impala rider who hangs around the market. For a Lunar, he went down. Didn’t come back. So now we’ve blocked up the tunnel but we leave offerings there. Funny thing is, since then, nobody’s lost any sheep.

Why small stories matter

It started as a rumour. We should have believed it.

Why small stories matter

You don’t need to come to a temple for me to tell you this. It’s because they make our lives deeper, dearie. If your child’s telling you the story of a blackberry bush, that might be small to you but it’s the biggest thing in her heart, so listen. Then she’ll keep on telling you the important things as she grows up.
